Job Description

We are excited to be able to recruit into this newly established Professorship, jointly set up with support from Versus Arthritis (formerly Arthritis Research UK). You will be joining the largest Department in the School of Clinical Medicine, which provides high quality research, teaching and patient care. The Department currently houses 32 Professors and over 400 directly employed staff and students.

The Professor of Rheumatology will have the opportunity to develop an internationally-leading academic Rheumatology programme in Cambridge. This will form part of a major strategic focus on immune-mediated diseases, immunology and infection in Cambridge. The Cambridge Institute for Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Diseases (CITIID) will open in mid-2019 and will house 25 groups with expertise in autoimmune and inflammatory disease, fundamental immunology, and infectious disease research. CITIID has its main base in the new Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre, but also incorporates the Molecular Immunity Unit embedded within the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology and has a footprint in Addenbrooke’s Hospital to facilitate clinical translation. The institute is centrally placed in the thriving Cambridge Biomedical Campus, home to Europe’s largest internationally competitive concentration of health care-related talent and enterprise. This is adjacent to the 1,100 bed Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Royal Papworth Hospital, the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (with its 12 Nobel prizes) and AstraZeneca’s Global Research and Development Centre, among many others.

The Professorship will be held in the Department of Medicine, which delivers high quality research, teaching and patient care. It currently holds competitive research grants of over £145M, and has strong strategic partnerships with the Wellcome Sanger Institute, the Babraham Institute and local “big pharma” (GSK and AstraZeneca/ Medimmune) and the thriving biotechnology network forms part of the Cambridge Cluster.

We are seeking candidates who have:

i. An outstanding research record of international stature in rheumatology, with a preference for synergy with existing research interests in the Department of Medicine.

ii. The vision, leadership experience and enthusiasm to develop and maintain a leading research presence, and an established record of attracting research grant support to further this development.

iii. The ability to further the academic planning and strategic development of rheumatology in the University of Cambridge and facilitate its development within the UK.

iv. The ability to manage and interact effectively with colleagues and students at all levels.

v. An enthusiastic commitment to the recruitment, training and mentoring of the next generation of researchers, including undergraduates, research students and postdoctoral researchers.

vi. A PhD or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
