Job Description

Bristol Myers Squibb are looking for an Undergraduate student to join their Chemical & Synthetic Development – Analytical (CSD-A) group at Moreton. The student will be trained in aspects of pharmaceutical analysis, many of which are instrumentally based.

The placement will be based at Bristol-Myers Squibb in Moreton, on the Wirral Peninsula. Work at Moreton is a vital part of developing new treatments and monitoring the effectiveness of existing drugs.

For undergraduates currently studying: Chemistry based degree
Salary: £18,500 per annum
Location: Moreton, Wirral
Holiday Entitlement: 25 days + Bank Holidays
Duration: 12 months
Hours of work: The hours worked are flexible around a 35-hour week

The CSD Analytical Chemistry function at Moreton works with BMS colleagues and CRMs/CROs across the globe to support CSD’s mission “To design and develop safe, efficient, environmentally appropriate and economically viable chemical processes for the manufacture of small molecule drug substances. To enable the successful commercialization of the small molecule portfolio by providing drug substance and well documented process knowledge to support preclinical and clinical studies, regulatory submissions and commercial manufacture.” The team have responsibility for developing and validating analytical methods and generating key analytical data to support proposed Regulatory Starting Materials and reagents and solvents used in the manufacture of small molecule drug substances. After appropriate training, the placement student will be involved in all aspects of the work within the team and will benefit from the experience of working with a group of analytical chemists, with diverse capabilities. The student will be given full training to comply with the requirements of working in a regulated environment and complying with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). The student will be expected to comply with ALL requirements where Safety, Health and the Environment are involved. Final acceptance will depend on the satisfactory outcome of a medical examination.

Skills and Knowledge


  • A keen interest in Analytical Chemistry

  • Interested in solving organic synthesis challenges using a range of analytical techniques including HPLC, GC and MS


Staff at Moreton have played an important role in the development of new treatments since the Second World War. Early successes included providing the first ever human clinical trial supplies of an ACE inhibitor and helping to make the treatment available to patients with high blood pressure and creating technologies for the delivery of diabetes treatments.

Moreton now undertakes activities the government licensing bodies call “CMC” – chemistry, manufacturing and control activities – in collaboration with colleagues at other BMS R&D sites around the world. These include investigation of new medicinal compounds to ascertain how best they can be turned into medicines that can be manufactured at commercial scale so that they have a useful shelf-life and can be expected to provide for reliable and reproducible absorption of the medicine into the bloodstream after administration.
