Based in the world leading research teams of the Bristol Composites Institute (ACCIS) and the Systems Centre at the University of Bristol, this is an exciting opportunity to join a strong team developing auxetic materials systems for dynamic loading capabilities.
You will develop the manufacturing and testing of auxetic (open cell foams) and nanocomposite inks to produce new classes of materials that provide enhanced energy absorption for highly nonlinear dynamic loading. A particularly important aspect of the post is to relate the manufacturing parameters for the production of the foams and the nanocomposites with vibration and energy absorption metrics, hence requiring the dynamic characterisation of the foams under a variety of loadings (including nonlinear scenarios). This information will be used to develop a new metamodel for the efficient production of these materials. The work is carried out within the EPSRC SYSDYMATS (SYstems Science-based design and manufacturing of DYnamic MATerials and Structures); other partners of the project are Sheffield University (Co-ordinator), Imperial College and the University of Derby.
You will have at least a PhD in Engineering/Materials Science (or closely related discipline) and have good experience of production of porous and composite materials, excellent know-how about dynamic testing techniques and modelling of materials/structure systems.
This post is offered on an open ended contract with funding up to September 2021.
