2 x Full-Time permanent post (37.5 hours per week) available at the Surrey Histology Hub in Guildford
An opportunity has arisen for an HCPC registered, motivated Histology BMS to join the large and friendly team.
Berkshire & Surrey Pathology Services is a joint venture between The Royal Surrey County, Frimley Health, The Royal Berkshire Hospital and Ashford St Peter’s Hospitals with the Surrey Histology hub at the RSCH processing some 74,000 surgical specimens per annum. The department has already undergone significant mergers and re-organisation over the past 5 years in line with NHS Improvement guidance.
The Surrey hub, based just off the A3 in Guildford, has recently undergone a bespoke refurbishment due for completion in August 2020. The large and friendly team seek Biomedical Scientists with an IBMS Registration Portfolio and knowledge of the histology process. This vacancy is for those with experience of operating as a BMS or Associate practitioner in a Histology laboratory. Support in completing the IBMS Specialist Portfolio will be offered and upon successful completion this role will be subject to upgrade to the Band 6 scale. Applicants with qualification and experience that does not meet HCPC requirements may be considered if there is a route to HCPC registration. Those applicants without Histology experience will not be considered.
Berkshire & Surrey Pathology Services is an exemplar site in terms of NHSI networks and is thus considered a stable network with no further mergers planned. The Surrey Histology side employs over 20 Pathologists, 21 Biomedical Scientists, 5 Associate Practitioners and 13 support grade staff. The laboratory supports St Luke’s Cancer Centre, a regional centre providing complex cancer surgery and radiotherapy and performs over 400 frozen sections per annum. There is an expansive Immunohistochemistry service, supported by Roche Diagnostics Ultra platforms, encompassing over 140 antibodies, skin immunofluorescenceand in-situ hybridisation with a projected 70,000 tests per year. The department acts as a secondary referral centre for Her-2 ISH and performs PDL-1 testing for the region. The department was instrumental in the introduction of OSNA into the UK and has recently undergone a £300k upgrade to the latest OSNA equipment and offers the per-operative technique at all 3 Surrey sites and full training will be given in this ground-breaking technique.
The department has recently automated tinctoral staining and utilises market leading HE600 H&E staining with tracking systems due to be installed in the coming months. A tender is also active for full digitisation of the service within 4 years.
All BMS staff in the Surrey hub will be trained to undertake dissection to category B and C in a sub-specialised manner, under the guidance of our Advanced Practitioner in Histological Dissection. It is the vision of the department to provide opportunities for BMS staff to progress into more complex dissection and BMS reporting over the coming years.
All training is supported by a dedicated Histology Training Officer with extensive and recent experience of IBMS Specialist Portfolio completion. The department actively encourages Specialist Portfolio completion as well as supporting the IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma and Certificates of Expert practice. There are also opportunities to study for online MSc modules via BioMed Online once trained to the appropriate level and as funding is released.
The post will be largely based at the RSFT in Guildford, with occasional rotation to one of the other BSPS Surrey Histopathology sites at Frimley Park, St Peter’s or Ashford Hospital.
