Essential Responsibilities:
As an EID Intern you will report to the Mechanical Team Lead either within the Valves Technology Department and the Valve Engineering Department. The successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic and rapidly growing team of engineers working on the development of new power electronics applications for power systems, particularly for HVDC converters and the forthcoming “HVDC Grid”. This is a very exciting and dynamic field of power engineering in which GE’s leading contribution has worldwide recognition. HVDC Valves are large and complex structures, with typical dimensions of several metres in each direction and weighing many tens of tonnes. The development of such converters is technically challenging and involves a variety of engineering disciplines, contribution through teamwork and an innovative approach.
The role gives an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to innovate, expand their design skill and personal development within an internationally recognised expert in this exciting field.

The Role – EID Intern

The role will involve working in the fast-paced project delivery sector of the business with the Valves Department for the first half of the placement, where skills such as communication, time management and knowledge building of the technologies and products of the business can be developed. The second half of the placement will be based in the Valves R&D department, where the candidate will experience the R&D process from design through to testing to verification, providing an opportunity to develop technical and lab skills.

Responsibilities:
Development of power electronic converter modules
Mechanical Design using 3D modelling and drawings
Ability to undertake technical reviews of technology with engineering experts
Define design specification
Define design calculation notes
Integration with other departments (engineering, manufacturing, S&P, SQA) for product development and support tendering and project delivery
Actively broadening and deepening HVDC knowledge
Strict adherence to safety policies and promote EHS within the team
Qualifications/Requirements:
Mechanical Design (e.g. material properties, including composites)
Detail manufacturing drawings and drawings templates.
Supply chain integration (e.g. technical communication, clause-by-clause review, production line audit)
Report writing and reviewing
Testing experience
Ability to interact with other engineering disciplines and good at sharing knowledge
EHS compliance ability
Familiar with PTC Creo 3.0 or similar
On track to achieve 2:1 at the end of the University degree
Advantageous:
Knowledge/understanding of high-power and high-voltage design and control issues
Thermal and hydraulic design
DFMEA & PFMEA
Willingness to develop ability in product design, validation and industrialisation
