About the role

As an Associate Scientist at Abcam, you will be involved in ensuring that our antibodies and gene edited cell lines meet our high-quality standards. Within Scientific Quality Control (SciQC) you will take an active part in the planning and coordination of the validation of our genetically edited cell lines and our best-in-class antibodies.

This post involves working closely with other members of the quality control teams across the globe. The ideal candidate will have research experience in the life sciences, be self-motivated, experienced in managing multiple tasks and working to deadlines.

Significant experience with antibody-based techniques and a capacity to interpret complex scientific data is essential. Being proactive in resolving problems and improving processes is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the validation of gene edited cell lines by
    • Reviewing protein targets
    • Planning and organizing sample preparations and validation testing for the team
    • Performing high through-put sample preparations and Western Blots
    • Interpreting in-house data (mainly Western Blot)
    • Helping to continuously improve current processes
  • Contribute to other projects as necessary to help drive quality standards within Abcam.

About you

Our ideal candidate will be MSc educated in Biological Sciences. A PhD would be advantageous. You will have hands on knowledge of working with antibodies and a desire to move into a commercial environment.

You will have a solid experience of the practical and theoretical aspects of experiments involving antibodies, e.g. western blot (WB), flow cytometry, immunocytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, ELISAs or ChIP. You will have confidence in interpreting data across several applications and take actions to resolve a problem or to improve the product features.

Previous experience within a commercial setting and/or project management experience would be an advantage, as would experience of working with academic collaborators and cross-cultural teams. You are expected to have advanced Excel skills and be driven to taking ownership of tasks.

You will be an enthusiastic team-player, with excellent communication skills, and able to work independently when required. Your focus will be on solving problems, as well as being consumer orientated. You must be able to work well under pressure and to tight deadlines. Additionally, you will be an effective communicator, comfortable building relationships within the team and across the business.
