Deputy Head of VAT

It is the responsibility of the Finance Division to manage the financial resources of the University. The Division, comprising of Taxation, Procurement, Financial Accounts, Reporting and Financial Planning & Analysis teams, is also responsible for maintaining the integrity of the accounting records, establishing best practice and for producing both the statutory accounts and management information to assist in decision making at all levels of the institution.

The role holder should hold a CTA or substantial qualification by experience in a tax environment. This role provides technical advice on complex VAT issues to staff and managers across the University so that the University is compliant with its tax obligations, but also ensuring that, within the bounds of the University’s Tax Strategy, transactions are structured to maximise the University’s funds for deployment into its primary purpose activities. The VAT Team is responsible for dealing with around £40m of input VAT incurred and £35m of output VAT payable annually, and this role directly supports the Head of VAT in achieving compliance and funding maximisation. This is a role that encompasses both 1) project leadership and 2) drafting strategy and processes for the Head of VAT and Head of Tax to approve, for both VAT compliance and maximising funding.

The role holder will also cover the Head of VAT responsibilities when the Head of VAT is on leave.
