Job Description

The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s leading providers of non-surgical cancer treatment, caring for a population of 2.4 million people across Cheshire & Merseyside, North Wales, the Isle of Man and parts of Lancashire.

Our flagship specialist cancer hospital in Liverpool opened in June 2020, supported by our hospital on the Clatterbridge Health Park in Wirral providing outpatient cancer treatment and supportive care, and our radiotherapy treatment centre on the Aintree Hospital site.

Together, working across three sites and operating specialist chemotherapy clinics in four of Merseyside’s district hospitals, we are able to deliver a comprehensive range of inpatient care, advanced radiotherapy, chemotherapy and other systemic anti-cancer therapies including gene therapies and immunotherapies. We also deliver a pioneering Treatment at Home and Work service; are the only facility in the UK providing low-energy proton beam therapy to treat rare eye cancers and host the region’s Teenage and Young Adult Unit, (supported by the Teenage Cancer Trust).

Working with leading experts from The University of Liverpool and the Cancer Research UK Liverpool Cancer Trials Unit we strive to stay at the forefront of novel treatments and techniques to deliver more effective and personalised treatments than ever before.

We are looking for an experienced engineer to manage aspects of the aforementioned proton beam therapy service, including an upcoming programme of planned upgrades. The post-holder will also have wider managerial responsibilities with regards to staff, training and documentation.

The Wirral site equipment currently comprises 4 Varian linear accelerators, one Philips Brilliance Big bore CT and two Xstrahl Orthovoltage machines. It is also home to the National Centre for Eye Proton Therapy, which operates the Douglas Cyclotron. The Aintree site has 2 Varian linear accelerators.

The central Liverpool site operates 5 linear accelerators as well as low-voltage treatment units in the form of Orthovoltage and Ariane Papillon, as well as Brachytherapy and CT services.

You must be skilled at fault finding complex electronic systems and with good attention to detail. Relevant experience working on radiation equipment and/or complex electronic equipment is desirable. Mechanical engineering experience would also be an advantage. Education should be to Masters level. If not already obtained, the post-holder will be expected to work towards achieving registration with an accredited healthcare body.

Applicants must have good communication skills and be able to work effectively both independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
